Advocating for PAMTA
My Rhetoric and Civic Life class, along with the Anti-Hunger Games, had helped me realize that it's not enough just to learn things-- there has to be a call to action and a change being made. I really felt that the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria was far too urgent to be ignored, so I decided to focus on this issue.
While doing research about factory farming and superbugs, I stumbled upon an article about the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA), a bill intricued in 2013 by New York Representative Louise Slaughter. If passed, this could mean real changes in the way drugs are used in agriculture. I decided to try to publicize PAMTA among my Penn State classmates, and, with their support, send a letter to our local representative Glenn Thompson asking him to back this bill.
I made a website, started a Twitter page, set up a petition, and promoted everything on Facebook.
